It’s alive…ALIVE!!!

Or I am, anyway. Sorry about my long absence, I apparently just haven’t had anything to say. And as I have mentioned previously, I am also quite lazy.

But now I have news. As of Sunday, we are the proud owners of a 4-year-old Greyhound! Because, you know, having just the 4-year-old kid wasn’t enough. We got her from Heart of Texas Greyhound Adoption in San Antonio. She is a beautiful girl, and so sweet! You can check her out at N’s Flickr account. I would put a picture here so you don’t have to click on another link, but hell if I can ever figure out how to do that without giving myself an aneurysm.

We have been thinking about Greyhound adoption for a very long time – ever since we went to a dog show back when I was pregnant (also known as the year 2002). There was an adoption group there, and we fell in love with the dogs – they are just so calm and gentle. I’ve never been one that liked the idea of a dog living in my house (I am paranoid about DOG SMELL), but after much research we decided that this would be the right kind of dog for us and we decided to finally go through with it now that AE is a little bit older. Greyhounds do have to live inside (their low body fat means they can’t handle extreme weather) so this will be a major adjustment for me, but the good news is that their lack of an oily undercoat means minimal stink (I hope).

I’m sure it will take me quite a while to get used to taking care of a dog. For example, this morning we had an indoor poop incident – but that was my fault. Poor girl was telling me that she needed to go out, but I missed the signals. I’ve never had a dog before!! I didn’t know! (But now I totally do. Will never happen again.)

Oh, and also: our cat is so, so pissed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of greyhounds. Be aware, they are like potato chips – you can’t have just one. I have 4. My daughter and I, 4 greys and 3 cats all live happily together in a Pennsylvania townhouse.
Except for a lot of big sleeping pillows all over the place – at least 2 per dog, one in living room, other is bedroom – you would hardly know they are around.
Enjoy your pooch. This is the greytest breed of all. Good luck.

Congratulations! Dog ownership is wonderful. And since they’re pack animals, having her inside will make her more a part of the family – it’s so worth it. All dog signals are different (Scarlett rings a bell on our back door to go out, Fiona whines), so even if you had a dog before you might have missed her signals – you will learn a lot about each other in the coming months – be prepared for a few more accidents. And also learning which cleaners your carpet prefers!
