I finally got around to watching Saw, and was pleasantly surprised.  (Odd as it is to connect the word “pleasant” with a movie like this.)  It wasn’t nearly as horrifically violent or depraved as I expected it to be, in fact I rather enjoyed it.  The acting was decent, the plot was solid, and I wasn’t at all disappointed with the ending.  My sister told me that she walked out of it at the theater it was so laughable, but I don’t agree.    It was creepy and bloody, to be sure, but not unnecessarily so.  At least not in my opinion, but I am far more of a horror movie buff than she.  It wasn’t what I expected at all, most of the story being told in flashbacks and quick snips.

Maybe I have a sick, twisted mind, but I enjoy a good chiller every once in a while.  The plot for this one was so macabre that I was able to enjoy it without worrying that it was going to happen to me.  Don’t get me wrong, I know that there are sickos in the world but Saw is so specific in its horror that it is hard to generalize and imagine yourself in a similar situation.  If THAT makes any sense at all.

I enjoy freaking myself out by watching scary movies, that is not news to anyone.  And this one had the perfect recipe for me – creepy, disturbing chills without something jumping out of the dark every 15 seconds.  No cheap thrills, just downright bizarre and horrific imagery, with the perfect amount of suspense.  Two thumbs up.  It’s how I roll.

*I actually wrote this Thursday night, while the credits were still rolling.  It has been edited for wine-induced grammar errors but nothing else.  :)

I’ve only seen the first installment of the SAW movies. I thought it was pretty good-very different from anything I’ve ever seen in the past and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I just can’t bring myself to rent the others. I don’t know why. Glad you enjoyed it though.

Oh, I figured that was just assumed. I forget that not everyone gets to refill your glass in the evenings like I do.

Well enjoy your SAW movies. There are about 50 of them now. Not my cup of tea but I know a lot of people that like them.
